Description


Leafy stout, small shrub, leaves are toothed, upper ones are small and lower larger, long and broad,ovate. Flowers numerous axillaries, ovary is hairy long, two particles, smooth surface. seeds are8x5mm small and ellipsoid, quite smooth. Flowering and fruiting time: autumn and cold season to simmer.

The root, leaves, seed and seed oil is used in the form of powder, seed and oil to treat piles, anaemia, jaundice, skin diseases, cyst, as purgative, wound and conjunctivitis.Piles(arasa):Leaves of trivrt(ipomoea turpethum), danti(Baliospermum montanum), cangeri(oxalis corniculata) and citraka(Plumbago indica) fried in oil and ghee (mixed) and added with fatty layer of curd should be given as vegetable (10-15 gms) (CS.Ci.14.122).Skin diseases (Kustha)Danti (Baliospermum montanum), trivrt (ipomoea turpethum)and brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) powder together should be taken with honey and ghee. It is beneficial for skin diseases, diabetes and numbness (10-15 gms) (AH.Ci.19.34) 1

Indications

Diseases – Internal: Udara, vibandha, agnimandya, yakrut vikara, swasa, ashmari, jwara, snake poison, skin diseases, gall stones.
External: Shotha, vedana, (mula) arsha, vata vyadhi, (Beeja, taila, seeds)

Therapeutic uses: Seeds: purgative – this is important purgative for virechana therapy. External application for stimulation and pain. Snake poison.

Roots: jaundice, joint pains, muscular weakness, rheumatic pains. Use Eranda and danti.
Paste of roots is applied on inflammations, painful conditions, organs and piles. Oil extraction from seeds applied to painful inflammatory conditions.
Asthma-decoction of leaves is given. Drug used in liver, abdominal and intestinal worms, amorbic liver ulcers. Good for urinary calculi.

External use

External application for stimulation and pain. Snake poison.

Internal use


Circulatory system: Blood purifier, raktagami. Reduces oedema by its eliminative action.
Useful for elimination of dosha in jaundice.
Digestive system: Being an appetizer, liver stimulant, cholagogue and laxative, used in
anorexia, haemorrhoids and helminthiasis
Respiratory system: Decoction of leaves used in dyspneoea.
Urinary system: Useful in calculi
Skin: Diaphoretic, cures skin disorders by eliminating doshas.
Temperature: Useful in fever with constipation

Precautions

Has a strong purgative action - not good to use because of this.

Parts Used


Parts used: Roots, seeds and leaves
Dosage: Root powder 1-3gms, seeds 2-5drops, or powder seeds 125-250mg. Decoctions: 40-80ml. For worms – vidangha: 3-5gms, 3x a day for 1 week. 1⁄4 – 1⁄2 tsp adult. 1⁄4 tsp children.

Important Combinations

Preparations: dantyaristha, dantyadi churna, danti haritaki churna, lepa – external application.
