Description
A shrub 60cm to 1.25mtr high. Branches – reddish, hairy and straight. Leaves opposite, 5-7cm in length, 2cm wide, tender with sharp tip, red having 3 venations. Fragrant when crushed. Flowers – violet.

External use
Acts on rakta dhatu and alleviates pitta, therefore acts as a haemostatic and is useful in cleaning and healing wounds and as an antidote for poisons.
Internal use
Cardiac stimulant. Also useful in bleeding disorders, haematuria, diarrhoea with disorders caused due to vitiated pitta in which different shades of urine are seen. Plays an important role in menorrhagia. In fever with rigours, decoction of leaves is used. A well known medicine for fevers in America.
